Christian contemporary music saw a surge in the 1990s with the formation of Christian rock record labels like Tooth & Nail in 1993, along with a surge of new bands in genres likepunknu metalska,and grunge. Popular 90s Christian artists charted on mainstream lists and found ways to spread the word while growing past the folksy family sound ofa lot of their 1970s predecessors.

Even though some bands, like MxPx, no longer identify as Christian bands they still were a huge part of shaping what Christian music grew to be in the 1990s.
